Trying to organize a coherent body of color photographs.
One of the hardest things that photography demands is the sequencing of images. It’s a knock-down, drag-out every time. Pure love—hate, ‘Night of the Hunter’ terror. I exaggerate, but not by a ton — ask any photographer.
My connection to photography began when I was a kid, I took it to art school, still hold it tightly and through all that time I still believe that a selection of unrelated images can communicate more than a sum of its parts. Creating that selection of images never goes as planned or even imagined; beloved pictures are cut because they just don’t work in sequence, photos previously unnoticed make the cut, and its always harder than it seems it should be. Ideally, the outcome is a group of pictures that can all stand on their own but that are able to impart something to the viewer greater than just an aggregation of individual images.
I don’t know how good at that I might be, especially at the beginning of the process.
Here, anyway, are ten pictures of about 150 that will be whittled down to about forty. They aren’t in any particular order, they are just ten that I’m reasonably sure that move me enough for inclusion, all from California. That probably means they’ll all be cut. Enjoy them, maybe you can figure out an order for them.
That’s it, not sure if they mean anything — or even if they are any good. They’re interesting to me though. Have a great week and keep a look out for pictures.
